CONCLUSION
In conclusion, today's computing has rapidly grown from being confined to one location. With mobile computing, people can work from any location as long as they are connected. Also high speed connections promotes the use of mobile computing.
Being an emerging and growing technology, mobile computing continues to be a core service in computing and also Information Communication and Technology.

APPLICATIONS OF MOBILE COMPUTING
- Emergency Services.
- In companies.
- Stock Information Control.
- Credit Card Verification.
- Taxi Dispatch.
- Electronic Mail/Paging.
- Web Access.
- For Estate Agents.
- Vehicles.
- Travelling Salesmen.
- Location aware services.
- Entertainment.
Some of the above listed applications are going to be explained
below;
Mobile computing is pervasive, it has the quality of being
everywhere.
The following are used for application of mobile computing:
1.EMERGENCY SERVICES
Mobile computing has the ability to support operations at
the scene of emergency, in control rooms and throughout the
organizations, mobile computing is playing a great role in the life
saving work day after day.
Mobile computing creates one durable fully integrated system
that allows first responders to maximize pre-hospital patient care and also
operation efficiencies thereby saving costs, time and lives.
2.FOR ESTATE AGENTS
Mobile computing makes agents more productive. They can work
either out in the field or at home. They can obtain current real estate
information by accessing multiple listing services and also immediate
feedback regarding specific homes, with also faster loan approvals since
applications can be submitted on the spot.
Mobile computing helps them to devote more time to clients. They
get access to listing services from home, office or car when out with clients.
3.IN COURTS
Mobile computing is mostly applied in courts because defense
counsels can take mobile computers in court. When the opposing counsel
references a case which they are not familiar with ,they can use the computer
to get direct real time access to online legal database services where they can
gather information on the case and related precedents.
Therefore mobile computers allow immediate access to a wealth of
information making people better informed and prepared especially in courts.
4.IN COMPANIES
Managers use mobile computers in some critical
presentations to major customers. They can access the latest market share
information, they can also revise the presentation to take advantage of the
information at a small recess.
They can communicate with the office about possible new offers
and call meetings for discussing responds to new proposals. Therefore, mobile computers
can leverage competitive advantages.
5.CREDIT CARD VERIFICATION
Mobile Computing is used for credit card verification at point
of sale terminals in shops, supermarkets and malls when customers use credit
cards for transactions, the intercommunication required between the bank
central computer and the POS terminal can take place quickly and securely over
cellular channels in order to effect verification of the card usage.
6.TAXI DISPATCH
Securicor is a system that allows secure deliveries and also
they are extremely useful. Using the idea of a centrally controlled dispatcher
with several mobile units (taxis) .
Mobile computing allows the taxis to be given full details of
the dispatched job as well as allowing it to be able to communicate information
about their whereabouts back to the central dispatch office. The Securicor
allows the central computer to be able to track and receive status information
from all of its mobile secure delivery vans. Again, the security and
reliability properties of the Cellular Digital Packet Data (CDPD)system shine
through.
7.ELECTRONIC MAIL
Using Mobile Computing, access to the internet allows
individuals to have a vast arrays of knowledge at his/her fingertips. Usage of
a mobile unit to send and read emails is a very useful asset for business
people, because it allows them to keep in touch with their colleagues as well
as any urgent developments that may affect their work.
Paging is also achievable, it gives more intercommunication
capability between people, using a single mobile computer device.
8.STOCK INFORMATION CONTROL
The use of small portable electronic databases accessed via
amobile computer is ideal in environments where the access to stock is very
limited i.e. factory warehouses.
Data
collated could be directly written to a central database , via a CDPD network
which holds all stock information, hence the need for transfer of data to the
central computer at a later date is not necessary. This ensures that from the
time a stock count is completed, there is no inconsistency between the data
input on the portable computers and the central database.
ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF MOBILE COMPUTING
Advantages:
1 - Portability: The main merit of mobile computing is portability
because you can carry it everywhere, you can get jobs done or even access your
email.
2 - Increase in Productivity: Mobile devices can be used out in
the field of various companies, it reduces the cost and time for clients and
themselves.
3 - Entertainment: Mobile devices are used for entertainment
purposes, for personal and even for presentations to clients and people.
4 - Cloud Computing: This service is available for saving documents
on an online server and also to access them anytime anywhere when they have
connection to the internet.
Disadvantages:
1 - Connectivity quality: As one of the disadvantages, mobile devices
will need either Wi Fi connectivity or mobile network connectivity such as
GPRS, 3G and in some countries even 4G connectivity ,that is why this is a
disadvantage because if you are not near any of these connections your access
to the internet is very limited.
2 - Security concerns: Mobile VPNs are unsafe to connect to, and
also syncing devices can also lead to security concerns. Also, accessing a
Wi Fi network can be risky because WPA and WEP security can be easily bypassed.
3
- Power Consumption: Due
to the use of batteries in these devices, they tend to not last long, if in a
situation where there is no source of power for charging then that will
certainly be a let down.
WHY MOBILE COMPUTING
Mobile computing can be defined as the ability to use technology
that is not physically connected to any static network. Nowadays, most laptops
and personal digital assistants(PDA) all have wireless cards or Bluetooth
interfaces built into them for very good mobile internet access. Mobile
computing is taking a computer and all other important files and software to
the next level.
Mobile Computing are :
- Wireless devices.
- Portable and easy to
carry everywhere.
- User interface
attractive.
Therefore
people prefer Mobile computing devices than any other.
